Trans-affirming Hormone Therapy

All patients have the right to trans-competent and trans-affirming health care, including access to gender-affirming hormone therapy, when appropriate.

What is Hormone Therapy?

Feminizing/masculinizing hormone therapy is a medically necessary intervention for many transgender individuals with gender dysphoria. Hormone therapy is individualized to the specific needs of each patient, and we will work with you to define your goals. We prescribe gender-affirming hormone therapy in accordance with guidelines from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s (WPATH) Standards of Care (2012) and the Endocrine Society Clinical Guidelines. (2017)

Your provider will work with you to meet eligibility requirements of your insurance for these treatments. All New York State Insurance Companies are required to cover transition related treatments. Your provider will work with you to meet eligibility requirements for your insurance plan.

Next Steps

Call us at (607) 431-5757 and let us know that you are interested in gender related care. You will be contacted to discuss your specific needs, and to answer any questions you might have.

Depending on your specific needs and choice, you may be referred to a mental health provider, a medical provider, or both.

Initial Medical Visit

  • Patients 18 Years of Age and Older: We perform a comprehensive health review, discuss your treatment goals with you, and make specific recommendations for care. We may recommend further evaluation to optimize health before starting treatment.
  • Patients Younger than 18 Years of Age: If you are younger than 18, a nurse coordinator may speak to you on the phone and answer your questions. However, we must have parental or guardian consent in order to schedule a medical appointment. At the appointment, we discuss your treatment goals with you and your parents/guardians, and perform a comprehensive health review. We can coordinate care with your therapist, if you have one, or refer you for a gender assessment and/or counseling at the Gender Wellness Center.

Initial Mental Health Visit

  • Patients 18 Years of Age and Older: The purpose of this visit is to learn about you and your needs. We use this information to develop a plan to help you make choices that move you toward living most comfortably as your authentic and whole self. This is an individualized process, which may include a gender assessment or medical referral, or it may simply be an opportunity for you to explore and clarify your needs. If you are under 18 years of age you will need the consent of your parent/guardian to schedule a mental health appointment.

Ongoing medical care visits range from weekly to monthly, depending on your individual needs.

All are welcome. Call us at (607) 431-5757 or just stop by.
